5 mistakes that make your business look homemade (and how to fix them)

We see it every week: businesses with a good product, good service and fair prices… losing customers over their image. The good news: the mistakes that make you look homemade are few, they repeat, and every one of them is fixable.

1. Using five different typefaces

Every new font you add takes credibility away from your brand. When Monday's post uses one typeface, Wednesday's another and the weekend flyer three more, the silent message is: this is improvised.

The fix: pick two typefaces — one for headlines, one for body text — and use them everywhere: posts, stories, flyers and WhatsApp. Consistency looks professional, and professional sells.

2. Blurry photos or messy backgrounds

The photo sells before the price does. A dark, shaky picture with a cluttered background makes your product look cheaper than it really is.

The fix: natural light (near a window or outdoors in the shade) and a clean background. You don't need a professional camera — your phone and five minutes of tidying up are enough.

3. Different colors in every post

Blue today, green tomorrow, purple the day after: your feed looks like three different businesses. People recognize brands through repetition.

The fix: define three colors (one hero color, one dark for text, one light for backgrounds), save their codes and repeat them always. We wrote a full guide to choosing them here.

4. A pixelated or stretched logo

A stretched, blurry logo — or one with a white box glued behind it — screams improvisation. It's your signature: if the signature looks bad, everything else loses credibility.

The fix: always use your logo in high quality with a transparent background (PNG or, better, vector). Never stretch it "to make it fit": adjust the design, not the logo.

5. Crowded text with no breathing room

When you try to say everything in one flyer — promo, phone, address, hours and three motivational quotes — nothing gets read. If everything shouts, nothing is understood.

The fix: one idea per design. Big type, a single call to action, and room to breathe. White space is design too.

Go through your profile with this list in hand. If you found two or more of these mistakes, don't be discouraged: it means fast, high-impact improvements are within reach. Your work is good. Now make it look good.
